March Finally saw the arrival of Spring to Edinburgh, and whilst I spent some of the nice weather stuck inside with COVID, it has proven to be a great month of outdoor adventures serving to remind me of the beauty to be found so close to home.

PART I: THE PENTLANDS
Much. of the month has been centred around training for my upcoming cycle through France and on to Spain, a trip that begins after my finals in mid-April and will see me through to the end of May. Having only recently committed to the idea and being relatively new to bike-packing I was keen to get out and make sure all my equipment, including my legs, would be up to the task. The day after I left COVID isolation I headed out in the Spring sun on a ride through the Pentland hills.

My first adventure involved a short tour out to the Pentland hills. Located only a 30-minute ride from my front door, it was amazing to suddenly find myself completely immersed in nature. Whilst the views were spectacular, a failure in route planning meant that I found myself on some pretty steep mountain bike trails and I ended up spending a lot of time off my bike and pushing. I returned home feeling lucky to have experienced the Pentlands in such good weather but a little concerned about my future bikepacking prospects.

PART II: WHITESANDS
Having warmed up in the Pentlands, my next ride I was keen to get a feel for what my bike would be like fully loaded with my tent and camping gear. I planned a route down the coast to a spot just south of Dunbar where I would camp for the night. Thankfully the terrain was much smoother this time and I had another great day of weather. 61km and a portion of fish and chips later I arrived at a pretty special camp spot on the beach…

After a night of listening to the waves I woke up to a pretty special sunrise and a calm sea.

A short walk along the beach and a few more phots later I headed back to the station to get the train home to Edinburgh.

PART III: CRAMOND
A more relaxed cycle adventure with Mert followed later that week where we headed out to Cramond to make the most of the last bit of sun and get some photos.

I managed to get a few nice portraits of Mert with my new 55mm 1.8 lens.

PART IV: SURF SKATE
It wasn’t just a month of cycling. The last few days I have been having a go at surf skating and managed to head out with Will and Adam who showed me how it was done…

Overall, it has been another busy month with a lot of shooting opportunities, having done a lot of travelling the last few months it was great to be reminded of all that Edinburgh and Scotland has to offer.
There will be a shorter edition next month for April before I head off on the bike trip and then a separate longer edition at the end of May to cover the cycle through France.
