PHOTOBLOG 5: May 2022

Updated: May 25, 2022

Having thought I would dedicate May's photoblog to my bike trip across France and Spain, I have decided instead to only offer a selection from a few specific parts of the trip as not to rush the edits out for this month. This blog, then, covers my days off and my various 'holidays within the holiday' where I was not on the bike. So enjoy this selection from my time in La Rochelle, San Sebastian and Santander...

PART I: LA ROCHELLE

My first break was about 10 days in when I arrived into La Rochelle. It was a relief to have a few rest days and Leti came up to meet me for a long weekend. We were both blown away by how beautiful La Rochelle was and it was the perfect place to just relax, eat nice food and recharge before I continued further South.

The weekend market was a particular highlight where we saw stalls selling anything from pig heads and whole tuna to strawberries and chocolatines. The hustle and bustle of this small city market was quite a contrast to my largely isolated and quiet cycling through agricultural France - it was nice to feel in amongst things again,

After a great few days away Leti had to go back to work and I had to continue on my journey South. Although we managed to get away with extending our stay by a day, I get the feeling we will be coming back here again at some point..;

PART II: SAN SEBASTIAN

About 10 days or so after La Rochelle I was crossing the Spanish border and arriving into San Sebastian. I had heard a lot about this place. Even before I started on my bike trip people were singing the praises of San Sebastian. from its amazing surf to its delicious food and beautiful scenery. I was excited to finally see what all the fuss was about and it certainly did not disappoint.

One of the highlights was making a short trip around the headland to Pasia, a traditional Basque fishing village where they continue to build and restore old Basque ships and whaling boats.

I ended up spending around 4 days in the city surfing, going out for pinchos and hiking up the surrounding hills. Again, this is a place I will definitely be coming back to.

PART III: SANTANDER

Santander was the final stop on my journey, but before getting the ferry home I had a lovely few days with friends at Leti's house in Anero just outside the city. This part of the trip felt like a classic summer holiday and having completed 99% of my cycle I was ready to relax and enjoy some time at the beach with my pals.

I always love shooting these kind of pictures on film - especially when there is a vintage car involved...

After a crazy 4 weeks away from home I have a hefty amount of editing to get through, but hopefully this blog has given you a taste of what is to come from the rest of the bike trip.

Thanks for reading, see you in the next one
