PHOTOBLOG 6: June 2022

This month's photoblog includes a selection of shots from a few different trips completed in June. Having taken the majority of my photos on digital over the last few months, I was keen to get back into my old 35mm SLR, the Olympus OM2sp. I forgot just how great (if expensive) shooting film in this way is, so expect to see a lot more 35mm shots included over the next few months. Enjoy this months selection from Denmark, Cornwall and the Western Highlands.

PART I: DENMARK

My brother, Oli, has been living in Aalborg, Denmark, for the last 6 months but is shortly due to move onto Poland as part of a European Masters programme in social work. Having never visited Scandinavia, I was keen to go and see him for a couple days in North Denmark before he moved on. Coincidentally, the weekend I was visiting was also the time of Aalborg's annual Carnival - an event that has an international reputation for its scale and flamboyancy. I was excited to capture this event on 35mm, and in particular to get some good portraits of all the weird and wonderful costumes and activities going on. With a roll of Kodak Portra 400 and Ilford HP5 I was hopeful to get some good shots.

Having not shot film for a while I was extremely happy with how these rolls came out. I love the black and white tones and the grain in the Ilford HP5, meanwhile, the smooth sharpness of Portra 400 is as mind blowing as ever. Taking photos at this event was also a joy as everyone was so keen to have their portraits taken, Everyone was just so excited to be back at the carnival after a couple years off due to COVID. The following day, the city quickly went back to its rule abiding, quiet and efficiently functioning self. My brother and I decided to head out to the beach on Denmark's northwest coast for some surfing and relaxing sauna time (they really do things right here).

Whilst the Danish surf didn't have much to offer, the beach town had fully embraced a surf lifestyle and had a very chilled energy. After a great day at the beach, we spent our last day back in Aalborg before I headed back to the UK.

PART II: HOME

After a great trip to Denmark I was back home for a couple days. It wasn't long before all the family had migrated back to the village and we had a rare 24 hours where we were all in the same place. Oli, Jenny and I were meeting up to travel down to Cornwall for a close family friend's wedding, meanwhile, Mum and Dad were about to set off on a big trip to Ecuador and the Galapagos islands. We made the most of the day at home and spent some quality time with the dog.

PART III: CORNWALL

Having travelled down for the wedding we spent the days either side of the main event swimming at the beach. It is rare for my siblings to all be together down in Cornwall so it felt like a throwback to our childhood heading down to the beach for a morning swim. We had a great few days and I am excited to spend most of the rest of my summer working in Cornwall again so keep posted for some more surf and underwater photography!

PART IV: SAILING OBAN & MULL

The second half of June was spent completing my Day Skipper in Oban and Mull on Scotland's West Coast. Having finished my theory over a year ago I had to delay my practical assessment for a year after I broke my ankle back in September 2021. I was excited to finally complete the course and get qualified. It was a pretty tough week with mixed weather and little sleep but nonetheless very rewarding.

From Day Skipper it was straight onto Glastonbury Festival. My roll of film is yet to be finished so stay tuned for those photos in the next one. Thanks to all those who continue to read these blogs, I hope you enjoyed this month and the return to black and white 35mm. Lmk what you think!
