This is the first of a new series of blog posts, in theory coming every month... will see how it goes. The format of these is likely to change as I try to navigate how I can best make use of this new platform and the kind of content I want to create through it. However, my hope is that this will provide a more engaging and interesting way to share my photos, giving a bit more context to the stories and processes behind taking them. This is something I have found to be lacking when I just post on instagram, let me know what you think!
PART 1: PORTRAITS OF HOME

It's pretty rare these days to get the whole family together, and although we are all grown up now, the excitement of Christmas still lingers on into adulthood. I am of the opinion that there is no better tool to capture the chaos of family gatherings, Christmas dinners and the intimacies of home life than a 35mm point and shoot. Whilst film point and shoots have become somewhat ubiquitous amongst pretentious university students who love to get some cool pics in the club (of which I am of course one), there is still a nostalgic charm to the imposing flash, dull tones and simplistic ease of use that makes these cameras so great for a quick snap of the chaos.

Alongside these slightly more casual and intimate pictures that I am sure my family will hate, I took some portraits of my siblings as a gift for my mum who had suggested that the family photos of us from school are perhaps a bit out of date. After a long break from taking portraits it was nice to experiment with some different cameras and ideas. I had hoped to take all of the portraits on my grandfathers old 120mm Zeiss Ikon Nettar, thinking that this would be a nice ode to previous family photographs taken on that camera throughout the generations. Typically, the nature of such an old camera and film photography, meant that my results were mixed. As a back up I took some on my Sony A7III.

PART II: BACK TO TRAVEL
After the last two years stopping us from getting out and about, December and January were embraced with a great amount of travel. I felt extremely lucky, and a bit guilty (will plant some tress), getting back on the plane and heading off to the Alps for some new adventures and a 23rd Birthday on the slopes. Unsurprisingly, I loaded myself up with pretty much all the cameras I own, ready to capture some of Switzerland's most dramatic landscapes.

Against all odds, Grandpa's Zeiss Nettar managed to get a few moody 120mm shots on Hp5...

After a brief stop over in Madrid, it was back to Edinburgh for the beginning of Semester 2. With the broken ankle recovered I am back on the surfboard and looking forward to more trips out into the highlands over the next months so stay tuned for next months issue, likely to feature some winter highland magic, and possibly some more surf photography of Scotland and beyond..
